Dear Members and Friends,

The American Club of the Riviera invites you to a private visit of the Maurice Denis exhibition followed by a savory lunch.

The Society of the Museum friends and the restaurant L’Ardoise are offering a unique experience in conjunction with the exhibition “Maurice Denis, the 1920’s. The Splendour of the South exhibition: a tour of the exhibition, followed by a lunch based on the artist's works.

Maurice Denis (25 November 1870 – 13 November 1943) was a French painter, decorative artist, and writer. An important figure in the transitional period between impressionism and modern art, he is associated with Les Nabis, symbolism, and later neo-classicism.

This year, the museum celebrates the 100th anniversary of the exhibition organised by the Société des Beaux-Arts de Nice in 1925.

The reconstruction and study of this exhibition highlight the importance of the artist’s successive trips to the south of France (1906, 1913, and 1922) during his prolific creative decade in the 1920s. The encounter between Denis’s world and the French Riviera also provides an opportunity to take a broader look at this very special moment in his life as a man and an artist. After the death of his first wife in 1919, his marriage to Elisabeth Graterolle restored his creative vitality, enabling him to respond to the many requests that crowned his career.

The blues and pinks sparkling with winter light that flood his works from this period reflect the fulfillment of an artist who found new inspiration on the shores of the Mediterranean during the peaceful interwar period.

Program:
11.00am : A guided tour of the exhibition.

12.30pm : A lunch inspired by his works – a menu designed as a gustatory canvas in tribute to the artist.
